They spent a day and night there and took part in a range of activities that involved team work and problem solving. One of the activities was to build a shelter for their team. Some of these were more successful than others. A great time was had by all.

I was particularly keen to develop this project as I know Switzerland reasonably well and it is very different to our Island.’

Swiss teachers all have to teach English in their classes and it is seen as an important part of the Swiss Government’s responsibility to continue to develop teachers’ training in this area, explained Mrs Udy. Placing them in schools overseas improves their linguistic skills.

‘I first heard about the assistant teachership scheme several years ago and am happy to have forged the necessary contacts to set in place us hosting teachers,’ Mrs Udy said.

‘Mrs Muller is studying with the university, which funds the trip as part of her professional development. During her time here, Miss Muller is working in every class in the school and accompanying school trips that are taking place.

‘She is finding it interesting to see how French and Manx are taught as additional languages at Andreas and Bride and, of course, she is teaching children about her own, landlocked country.

‘Mrs Muller also has to keep a journal and we are setting aside time to support and develop her understanding.’

Mrs Muller is staying with a family from the school and Mrs Udy said: ‘The family are excited about having her to stay and showing her their favourite places.’

Mrs Muller, 46, taught six to nine-year-olds at a Zurich primary school prior to having her own three children, now aged 17, 13 and 10. She has resumed her teaching career and is working towards becoming certified to teach English to primary pupils. The assistant teachership opportunity is part of those studies.

She said: ‘I have been looking forward to my time on your beautiful Island and to learning more about your culture and school system, making new friends and being surrounded by the English language.’

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Education and Children, called at Andreas and Bride School today to welcome its newest ‘recruit’.

He said: ‘I was delighted that Mrs Muller was able to join us at Bride and Andreas School. Too often we tend to ignore the outside world and concentrate on ourselves. I am sure that she will bring another dimension to our pupils’ learning which will benefit both them and Mrs Muller.’
