Emus are common in Australia but don't expect to see them flying overhead if you ever go there - the emu is six feet tall and weighs 40kg but its tiny wings, only 20 cm long, are useless for flying. Its long legs make up for this, though. Emus can walk hundreds of miles and can run at speeds of at least 30 mph! |

Although the female emu lays the eggs, from then on the male does all the work. He sits on the eggs for 8 weeks (not even leaving them to eat or drink) and looks after the chicks for a whole year. He even protects them from their own mother! |

Female emus make an incredible noise which sounds like the booming of a big base drum. |
