Once, these playful
creatures were common in the U.K. but they were hunted for sport or
for their fur, and as a result became very rare. |

Otter droppings (called spraints) are usually the only clue that otters are around. Otters are so shy of humans that it is very hard to observe them in the wild. | |

Although otters spend a great deal of time in the water, their skin never gets wet! This is because they keep their fur covered in special oil to waterproof it. | |
