In the wild, flamingos live in flocks of hundreds , sometimes thousands. They gather on salt water lakes, where they feed by holding their heads upside down in the water and using their unusual beaks to filter out tiny creatures and plants. |

Flamingos are pink because some of the foods they eat in the wild contain a dye called canthaxanthin. Flamingos in zoos must take a supplement of this dye, otherwise they would turn white! ( Is this a problem? Yes! White flamingos are not attractive to the opposite sex so they would not be able to breed) |

By studying fossils, scientists have discovered that flamingos have lived on earth for longer than almost any other type of bird. | |
