Humboldt
Penguin
Penguins can't
fly but they are such brilliant swimmers that they seem to "fly"
through the water using their wings as flippers. The Humboldt penguin
does not live at the South Pole, but on the coast of S. America.

Most birds
have hollow bones but penguin bones are solid and heavy tho help them dive
deep (up to 100m) underwater to catch fish. |
The penguin's
chest is white so that predators ( like killer whales or seals) coming up
from below will find it hard to see it against the bright sky. Birds of
prey swooping down from the air, on the other hand, will not see the penguin's
black back against the dark sea. Brilliant camouflage! |
