King Vulture

This handsome creature from the forests of central and South America looks like a bird of prey, and lives on meat. However, it does not kill its food, but feeds only on animals that are already lying dead. It circles around on the look-out for other vultures feeding, then swoops in to grab its share.

Did you know?

Vultures do a very important clean-up job, preventing rotting carcasses from lying around and spreading disease.

Wow!

Sticking your head inside a large dead animal is rather a bloody business. The vulture's bald head and neck are specially adapted to prevent the problem of messed-up feathers.
