Marine Toad

These large toads are sometimes known as cane toads because they eat the cane beetles that eat up sugar cane crops.

They have brownish warty skin and a bony ridge between their eyes. They move by making short hops, and like to hide under piles of leaves. Their colour helps to camouflage them.

Did you know?

Marine toads don't come from Australia but people took them there so that they would eat up pests that destroy crops. But it didn't really work, and now there are so many marine toads in Australia that they have become pests themselves!

Wow!

The lumps behind the marine toad's eyes squirt out a slimy poison called bufotoxin. It is so strong that it can paralyse or kill a dog that tries to eat a marine toad.
