Red Eared Terrapin

A bright red stripe behind each eye gives these terrapins their name. They mostly live in the water, but come out to sunbathe on the rocks or to lay their eggs.

Did you know?

Although they spend much of their time in the water, terrapins cannot breathe underwater - they need to come to the surface to take a breath.

Wow!

Terrapins do not have any teeth, but they can still bite because the edges of their jaw are very sharp! (The same goes for turtles and tortoises too.)
