Rhea

This large South American bird makes up for not being able to fly by being a superb runner - apparently it can out-gallop a horse!

It has excellent hearing and eyesight which help it to detect enemies from a long way off.

Did you know?

Rheas are starting to become a threatened species because some farmers regard them as pests and shoot them.

Wow!

A male rhea makes a nest on the ground and invites several females to lay their eggs in it. He then looks after all the eggs (perhaps 30 or 40!) by himself. He goes on to raise all the chicks on his own too.
